Chapter 2 of the Bedford Researcher describes Exploring and Focusing on a topic.
Step 1: Create a Plan to Explore Your Topic - a list of perople who can discuss your topic -a list of Q's you can ask people - a system for keeping track of the information you collect - a list of resources to search and browse
Step 2: Discuss Your Topic with Others - Talking about your topic with people who know about it or have been affected by it can provide you with insights that are not available through other sources.
Step 3: Conduct Preliminary Observations - Observing can provide you with information that isnt available from other sources.
Step 4: Find and Review Sources - Search librarys online catalogs, brows librarys shelves, news stands, bookstores databases etc.
2b: How can i focus on an issue?
Step 1: Identify Conversations about Issues in Your Topic - Look for patterns in the information, ideas, and arguements you encounter in your sources
Step 2: Assass Your Interest in the Issue - Determine your personal interests in each issue by asking what interests you most about each one
Step 3: Choose an Idea - Select the strongest candidate and the one that interests you the most
