The movie Chalk was a "mockumentory" about high-school teachers a faculty. This movie really brought schoolteachers down to a human level. It expressed their troubles with dating, friendships, and kids.
I thought that this movie really emphasizes on Freire's "The teacher chooses to enforce his choice and the students comply." There's a scene in the move were Mr. Stoope (the enthusiastic history teacher) wants to win the "Best Teacher of the Year Award". So he decides to make the students do things other than learn history to give him the upper hand in winning. I thought that this showed him enforcing something other than learning one the students and the students simply complied, without having another choice.
Mr. Stoope also has a humorous scene where a student in his class is using large words and making Mr. Stoope feel stupid “You
use some big words I don’t understand. Use words I can understand". This is similar to Gatto's explanation of the public school system trying to make every individual into a monotonous being and to simply reduce them all to the same level.
There's a teacher named Mr. Lawry, in the film they show that he's a first year teacher and very inexperienced. His first day is awkward and monotonous, you can see that the students are clearly bored. This refers back to Gatto's explanation of boredom. “They said the work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already
knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just
sitting around” This is obvious on the faces of the students in my Lawry's classroom, clear boredom because he's very inexperienced and never wanted to be a teacher in the first place.
