My high school experience was similar to Gatto's explanation of high school, but in a way i feel like it was more my fault then the teachers and faculty's fault. Gatto described high school as very negative and unsatisfying, I felt this way about high school but i didn't feel as if it was meant to be that way. I was very unmotivated in high school until my senior year simply because i was stuck in a rut and never tried to get out until the end of my last year. I was fortunate enough to have a strong group of teachers that really motivated their students to excel and be the best that they could be, of course there where a few teachers that i heard rumors about who apparently didnt give a hoot about their students and simply stacked packets apon packets on them, but i was lucky enough to never register into their classes.
Gatto described three points that he said where what our school is supposed to do but never successfully accomplishes;
1) To make good people.
2) To make good citizens.
3) To make each person his or her personal best.
I honestly believe that the majority of my teachers had those three points in their mind and did their bbest to successfully apply these to their students.
It's kinda funny thought there was actually a teacher that my older brother had in high school who was laid of for being to involved with his students. He was like 80 years old and absolutely loved teaching, but apparently he got a little to involved with his students and would have group discussions in his own home! eventually the school board found out and fired him haha, i think it was just an excuse to fire him cuz he was so ols thought.
